Party of 6

Adventuring and traveling with a family of 6

Stop 4: Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, NM

We put in some miles on our feet this trip. But first we stopped by to see family in Amarillo, TX. May I just say, if you ever find yourself in Amarillo, TX, run don’t walk to SheShe Cakes. Absolute amazing bite-sized (and full sized cheesecakes if you choose).

They were gone before we ever left the parking lot. After visiting a bit with family we were off to Cibola National Wildlife Refuge.

The campsite for the night. This was the first time this trip we have primitive camped. No on site water or electric. There was also no restroom or bathhouse. We all survived.

The beautiful sunset at our camp.

Moonpies over the campfire.

Breakfast by the fire.

Knot tying lessons this morning.

Then we went for a morning hike that turned into quite the adventure. Our goal was to climb to the top of Mt. Taylor. We were told that you could drive up almost to the top. This is absolutely true if you are on a 4-wheeler or maybe a Jeep, but not a Highlander with a trailer. We decided to drop the trailer at one point that actually had a cut out. (The road was mostly one lane up the side of a mountain.) Our car did amazing and we made it pretty far, but the rest we did on our feet.

Absolutely stunning views as we hiked up.

Our car down at the bottom as we were hiking up.

We did it. We made it to the top of La Mossa Lookout.

We made a chipmunk friend.

Steve, Izzy, Bo, and Ry walked a bit further

So back down we went.

Pretty flowers on the hike.

We walked back down to our car, but since we did not accomplish what we came out to do, we started the trail to Mt. Taylor. Such pretty views.

We reached the summit of Mt. Taylor! Mission accomplished.

Back down to the car.

Dirty car, but she made it.

On our way to our next destination, we made a pitstop at a Historic Route 66 marker.

We also did laundry.

The car got a bath.

And we had an ice-cream treat. Grand Canyon here we come.
