It was about a 45 minute drive from Giza to Saqqara and boy was it eventful. We played “I spy oh my goodness what is that” which included: cars, people, tuk tuks, donkeys with carriages, horses, with carriages, a man with one leg walking in the the road. There was lots of honking and no one drives in the lanes. There is trash everywhere, in the streets, in the canals. Way too many men on one scooter or in a van. It was wild!

We visited the oldest stone structure (pyramid) in the world. The Djoser Pryamid is a step pyramid and part of a greater pyramid field or cemetery. It includes tombs spanning multiple dynasties. We got to go inside several of the pyramids and tombs.

We visited an Egyptian grocery store and made lunch on the hood of the car.

We then started the drive to Luxor.

We decided to stop in our only option before getting to Luxor, which was Sohag. It was crazy! The AirBNB was not great in an even worse area. The “hotel” looked like it was the Tower of Terror. They had a “restaurant” in the “hotel” in which they ordered from another restaurant and brought to their restaurant. It was next to a train station with a train going all night. There was also a mosque, which they pray all night over a loud speaker. I don’t think any of the Egyptians sleep because there were cars honking and people talking all night. There was a rooster, who didn’t just crow at sunrise, and no heat in the room. We were ready for our trek to Luxor, so we thought.
