Party of 6

Adventuring and traveling with a family of 6

Luxor, Egypt Day 1

What a WILD drive from Sohag to Luxor. First of all, there are what seem to be a million checkpoints complete with military and police. Some just let us through with a wave and some stopped us and checked all identification. Some even stopped us and made us follow them to the next checkpoint. It was insane! However, after adding an hour to the drive time, we made it safely to Luxor.

First up was Valley of the Kings. This is the Ancient burial site of some of Egypt’s most famous Phorohs. We went inside Rameses V/VI, Ramesses III, Merneptah, and Tutankhamun.

We then drove to our AirBNB, which is on another sketchy “road,” checked in, parked the car and headed toward dinner. We did a bit of site seeing, while be haggled by VERY persistent Egyptians, before taking a boat across the Nile to go eat. We had “pizza” complete with something they call cheese and sand at a 4.8 rated restaurant. Needless to say, we boxed most of it up and gave it to local kids.

We took the boat back and visited the Luxor Temple. Luxor Temple is unique because it wasn’t built for a specific Egyptian god, it was built as a symbol of power and coronation. Many phoroahs added to it over the years. Later Romans and Early Christians used the space as well. We visited the temple at sunset, so it was very neat.

More of Luxor to come.
