Austria has a beautiful countryside, Salzburg was an adorable town, and we got to recreate scenes from the Sound of Music.

Salzburg has a stunning castle that can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. It was orginally built in 1077 and greatly expanded between the 15th and 16th century. This fortress has never been conquered by enemy troops.

The views from the top of the castle were spectacular.

We had lunch at a super cute restaurant where the hostess and host were great. They were quite funny when they were telling us they had never seen the Sound of Music, but have lots of tourists come through that come to see the movie locations.

We tried Mozartkugal. It is a layered chocolate with pistachio center, hazelnut layer, and dark chocolate on the outside. It was delicious. It is named after Mozart, who was born in Salzburg, Austria.

Now to the Sound of Music movie locations. First up was the gazebo from the song, “16 Going on 17”

The gazebo is now at Hellbrunn Palace, and not the orginal film location. It was beautiful at the palace.

Next up was where the front of the Von Trap Villa scenes were filmed, which is the Frohnburg Palace. The palace is now part of the University in Salzburg.

Next was the convent that Maria was orginally at before becoming the governess. The location is Nonnberg Abby and it is still an active nunnery.

The next film location we went to was the cemetery scence where they are escaping the Nazis. The scene is at St. Peter’s Cemetery.

We went to Mirabell Gardens where the Pegasus Fountain is. Here the scence with Maria at the fountain and the song “Do-Re-Mi” was filmed.

Lastly, related to Sound of Music, we saw the palace that was used as the back of the house scenes and the conoe in the lake.

We saw other beautiful scenery and buildings as we walked around the city of Salzburg.
